Self-cooling mats work by drawing heat away, so they do their job best on a hard floor in shade rather than stacked on a thick bed that insulates them. Don't put one inside a crate over bedding for the same reason. Two in the pack means one in use and one in the wash, which in summer with a big dog is the realistic rhythm.
